When the Tools Arrive After the Lawsuits
In November 2024, Roblox announced major safety updates. Remote parental controls. Communication restrictions for children under 13. Content labels. Age-tiered access. Screen time limits.
All good features. All arriving years too late.
The announcement came after Texas filed suit calling the platform a "digital playground for predators." After Alabama and West Virginia reached multi-million dollar settlements. After federal lawsuits involving child sexual exploitation were centralised into multidistrict litigation.
The features were implemented because not implementing them had become legally and financially unsustainable. That timing reveals priorities.
Safety tools that arrive after lawsuits are reactive by definition. They're responses to problems that have already harmed children. The architecture was built for growth and engagement. Safety came later, once the costs of not having it became impossible to ignore.
The updates are improvements. Remote parental controls help. Blocking direct messaging for under-13s by default is better than letting strangers contact children freely. Content labels give parents information.
But they don't change the fundamental reality:
Platforms that build for growth first and safety second create dangerous environments that need to be fixed after children have already been hurt.
When Ian and I are building oodlü, we're trying to ask safety questions before we write a single line of code. What if the architecture itself minimised certain harms from the start rather than requiring moderation to catch them after the fact? What if children could only interact with known groups rather than millions of strangers? What if adults were in the loop by design rather than through opt-in controls most parents never enable?
These questions have to come first. Retrofitting safety onto growth-first architecture simply doesn't work at scale. The November 2024 updates prove this. They're comprehensive, thoughtful, expensive. They're still reactive. And they still arrived years too late for the children who were harmed whilst the platform prioritised growth over protection.
There's another layer to this that bothers me. The accreditation bodies that give safety badges, the ones that tell parents "this application is safe for children," they operate on processes and checkboxes. They review policies. They verify that moderation systems exist. They confirm that parental controls are available.
What they don't do, typically, is examine the fundamental architecture. They don't ask whether the design itself creates the conditions for harm regardless of how comprehensive the moderation policies look on paper. A platform can tick every box in an accreditation process whilst simultaneously allowing millions of strangers to contact children directly.
I'm not saying these bodies are trying to be dishonest. They're attempting to do important work. But the process doesn't work well enough when it focuses on policies rather than architecture. When platforms that have documented, widespread, systematic child safety failures can still earn safety badges, the accreditation process itself has failed at the first hurdle.
Safety by checklist creates the illusion of protection without delivering the reality.
Parents see the badge and assume someone has verified the platform is safe for their children.
Meanwhile, the architecture underneath allows exactly the kinds of harm the badge is supposed to prevent.
Real safety requires examining how a platform is built from the foundation up. Not just whether policies exist, but whether the architecture makes those policies necessary in the first place. A platform where children can only interact within known, adult-supervised groups doesn't need the same moderation infrastructure as one where millions of strangers have access to children. The architecture itself determines what's possible.
One legal analysis put it bluntly: "For families whose children have already suffered trauma, these belated measures feel like a hollow victory."
That's the cost of building for growth without solid foundations. When safety features arrive after lawsuits, after settlements, after years of documented harm, the growth you achieved becomes built on sand. The reputational damage torpedoes the very growth you were optimising for. Children get harmed, and the platform's long-term viability gets damaged.
There's nothing wrong with optimising for growth. The issue is optimising for growth in ways that create the conditions for reputational collapse. Build your house on sand, and it falls when the storms arrive. The lawsuits are the storm. The settlements are the cracks appearing. The safety updates are attempting to shore up foundations that should have been solid from the start.
From both a business and ethical perspective, building with solid child safety foundations from the beginning makes sense. Smart growth means sustainable platforms that parents can trust. Short-sighted growth creates legal liability and damaged reputation alongside the user numbers.
We're choosing differently with oodlü. Known groups. Adults in the loop. Architecture designed around protection first, growth second. Does this mean we're less likely to reach 100 million daily users? Probably. Does it mean we're building something sustainable that won't collapse under the weight of its own safety failures? That's the goal.
The November 2024 updates tell a story about what happens when you build for growth without considering the foundations needed to sustain it. Different architecture creates different outcomes. That's what we're trying to build.
