AI Needs a Teacher in the Loop

A new scoping review in Frontiers in Education pulled together 104 empirical studies published between 2008 and 2024. The pattern that emerges is worth paying attention to: AI-generated feedback can help, but teacher feedback still tends to do better, and hybrid approaches with human oversight outperform AI-only setups.

This debate is already happening in classrooms, staffrooms, and policy discussions, as it should be. A recent TES survey found that 76 per cent of teachers now use AI in daily work, while 49 per cent say their school has no AI policy for staff or children. Teachers are navigating this ahead of the guidance.

NCTEs working framework for responsible AI use puts student voice, critical AI literacy, and academic integrity at the centre. That approach seems to match what teachers are already discovering in practice.

Teachers already know that AI works well for routine feedback. Spelling patterns, missing citations, structure suggestions, a first pass on a pile of writing. That saves time and clears space for the work that actually needs a person.

But once feedback has to judge voice, reasoning, evidence, or tone, the machine loses ground. Children need feedback that shows an adult has read closely enough to understand what's happening in the writing.

That's why process matters so much. In an active r/ELATeachers discussion about plagiarism and AI, the strongest answers keep coming back to the same things: in-class writing, multiple drafts, document history, conferences, and oral explanations. The real evidence is in the process, not a detector score attached to the final document.

Edutopia's reflection on adult AI use highlights something teachers have probably noticed: children notice the gap between what adults do and what they ask of them. If adults treat feedback as something to outsource completely, children pick up on that.

The clearer standard teachers seem to be reaching toward is straightforward: use AI to speed up the mechanical parts. Keep the adult in the loop for meaning. Judge writing through drafts, revision, and explanation. That's more likely to protect learning, trust, and the habit of thinking on the page.
